Your BMI, on Indian cutoffs

Most apps read your BMI against a European body, where overweight starts at 25. For Asian-Indian bodies it starts at 23 — the same number means something different.

24.2
Overweight

By Western standards you'd be called normal. On Asian-Indian cutoffs, you're overweight.

A Western app would call this normal. Poshan cuts the rice, keeps the dal, and doubles the sabzi.

The Indian scale

  • Underweight< 18.5
  • Normal18.5 – 22.9
  • Overweight23.0 – 24.9
  • Obese≥ 25.0

Cutoffs per the WHO expert consultation on Asian populations (2004), adopted in India's national guidelines. BMI is a screening measure, not a diagnosis — it says nothing about muscle, and a doctor's reading of it beats an app's.
